The Prequels: Week 3

The third week of our little Pre-campaign Campaign.

Patron Players & their Orders for the Week are as follows:

House Gralhund:

Lady Yalad visited one of the city's more shady loan sharks; Istrid Horn, to see about securing a 1000gp loan. For 10% of the principle per week, or may have to resort to other means of collection.

(95 social interaction reaction roll: Friendly immediate action)

She took the measure of the dwarf, realising that while relatively new to the city everything else she had heard about the dwarf was true. A shrewd business woman, but trustworthy enough.

The Lady's errands in town were not over as she got into contact with someone willing to sell a set of Sending Stones, unfortunately she didn't have the liquid capital to secure the purchase.

Frustrated at seemingly being messed around the Seller moves on (Uncertain, prone to Negative)

The Houses trade convey, sent to Amphail, failed to secure a buyer and was currently parked in the stockyard as they continued to search for one.

Lord Gralhund's handling of the Houses business ventures continues, bringing in a profit of 10gp. As he attempted to pick up prior House Amcartha contracts.

With a little help from some glowing puff pieces in the Wazoo, rumours of the Houses prized Arms & Armour make their way around town by the end of the week.

Urstul Floxin continued to knock heads in trying to find who attempted to rob Quartermaster Dench. Finally finding that not only was the robbery not 'Guild' sanctioned, the City Guard was also leaning on the City Watch to hurry up and solve this case.

Hurv asks Skeemo about the opportunity to "Apprentice" under him, but the Gnome is guarded and sharply told the gardener to pound sand. These were secret family recipes, and he can't have the man cutting into his business.

(Negative social interaction)

Leaving the gardener to do his own research. Leading Hurv to realise that while he can easily grow useful herbs, he would need proper Training (10 weeks to gain Tool Proficiency) to harvest their poisons safely.

Hrabbaz held down the fort, while the Nimblewright accompanied the Lady of the House on her errands.

The spy's on loan from Manshoon spread out across the city; gaining a contact in the Jester's Guild, the criminal underworld, and gathering information about the Most Careful Order of Smiths and Metalforgers. Confirming they would become outright antagonistic if they found out the House was importing 'scab' forged weapons.

The Catgiraffe turned out to be a highway robber named Bryant Stigandr, and that the warlock conclave known as the Blood of Garguath, which the Lady sought, was shattered years ago after their Lord was sealed.

The Wazoo continued to pay well for some investigative reporting; the House enjoying glowing reviews and positive advertisements.

Manshoon:

Manshoon made a rare visit to the city proper, spurred from his tower by the growing need to acquire a Scroll of Planar Binding, unfortunately his trip was unsuccessful. His Simulacrum also failed in making contact with Lady Haventree.

Manafrat Cherryport likewise spent a week fruitlessly search for the magic items his master wanted.

Urstul Floxin had a bit more luck, learning that Dorgar Aderbrent spent most of his time in the city's graveyard; the City of the Dead. Tending gravesites and enjoying long moments of quiet contemplation.

Vevette Blackwater managed to track Thardouk Starbuckler down to his Guild affiliated bakery in the Trades ward. He lived modestly, sleeping above the shop.

Havia and Mookie continued to serve as bouncers, earning 20gp in wages. But Mookie stumbled upon something in the back of the store, the shop seemed to be a front for some dark cult.

Yorn the Terror's reputation allowed him to garner higher wages as hired muscle earning 20gp, and Agorn Fuoco cleans up earning 20gp in tips.

Ered, Havi, and Savara spend their week taking shifts chanting strange magic that keeps the demon Barlgura slumbering. While Kaevja Cynavern delved into the darker secrets of demon summoning. She found several promising leads:

- 1 HD of blood a week, the loved one doesn't have to be the summoner, the blood must be freely offered.

But her sneaking into the more restricted sections of the city's libraries got her banned from the premises. Until certain reparations are made.

The spy's fail to turn up any information about those who dared to rob the stores under the 'Protection' of the Zhentarim. The Thugs and their flying snakes did manage to earn 10gp offering pest control services.

House Thann, begrudginly relays to Manshoon that the City Watch has increased security around the Palace prison. Force Grey has captured a Mind Flayer that serves The Xanathar.

Someone attempts to extort Manshoon for 5gp.

Force Grey:

Vajra Safahr begins an in-depth study of Illithid physiology to learn exactly how much punishment the creature can take. And what would be required for her to craft the material component needed for an Imprisonment spell.

Monster Research: Aberration - 13HD, so 6500gp = 130 workweeks to craft or DC30 persuasion and 2d6 x 25000gp to purchase.

Meloon and Saethe guard the Tower, while Barnibus went to work gathering what information he can about the Stone of Golorr. Strangely finding very little, but with some deduction he feels such an item may be within the vaults of the Xanathar Guild.

Vajra also asks the Watch to keep her in the loop in case any 'people in high places' put in sudden transfer orders involving a certain tentacled prisoner. And allow Saethe to periodically check in on the prisons security arrangements.

Xanathar:

The Crimelords week started with envoys from the Zhentarim requesting a meeting to discuss a potential alliance.

Xanathar, and his flesh puppet piloting Intellect Devourers, gather what information they could about the snitch at the Amendsfarm:

The Delivery schedule - Every 9th day of the month a cart full of prisoners is escorted (armed guards) down to the farm, and the cart is then loaded up with produce from the Farm to be sold in the city, as a way for them to pay off their crimes.

The snitch and his family - A half-elf by the name of Xanthos Sylvaranth, a Guild affiliated cobbler and shoemaker. The oldest of 6 siblings and his folks are farmers from Southcliff.

As for his siblings:

  • the 2nd oldest is alive and infamous, a Guild affiliated Jeweller, something of a card sharp.
  • the 3rd oldest is alive and well, a Guild affiliated Bureaucrat.
  • the 4th child is dead. The criminal Enforcers death was ruled an apparent suicide.
  • the 2nd youngest is alive and well, a Guild affiliated Brewer.
  • the youngest is alive and well, a Guild affiliated Artisan Leatherworker.
(all rolled up using XGE's This is Your Life tables)

Nar'l Xibrindas and Noska Ur'Gray planned the break out of Nihiloor, but its execution was bungled by Ahmaergo and his Bandits. So much so that they've increased the Watch presence. Making any future attempts even more difficult.

Korgstrod and Grum'shar failed to rob some struggling merchants, but did manage to escape.

Some Bandits went carousing and made a few friends (3 allied middle class contacts), others robbed a struggling merchant. Coming away with 25gp in loot, and a 50gp bounty on their heads.

Down in the Pit of Blood and Fortune (Xanathars personal fighting pit, also known as the Blood Pit); Bugbears, Duergars, Hobgoblins, Grell and Intellect Devourers all clashed. Winning a pot of 650gp. Though, one of the Duergar pugilists was accused of cheating.

His reputation took a hit, but that doesn't matter much down here in Skullport.

Three Duergar attempted to claim the bounty on their own heads, by gaslighting the victim. They failed and the attempt ended up costing them 8gp.

A pair of Goblins rolled a struggling merchant for 25gp worth of loot. They escaped but the victim petitioned the Watch to double their effort in solving the crime. An Intellect Devourer driven skinsuit stole goods worth 25gp, a gang of Kenku got away with 50gp worth of goods, and a gang of Kobolds managed to steal 25gp worth of goods.

A bounty was issued for them.

The Gazers, Kuo-toa, Kuo-toa Whip and Merrow guarded the beholders lair.

However, on the 20th of Nightal Xanathar discovered an item from his collection was missing!

It had been taken from the most secure place he had.

Thankfully he went after Nihiloor this week, because the Mind Flayer rolled a 5 on his Loyalty, and I rolled a 4 on a d4 to reduce the current Loyalty because he'd failed.

Jarlaxle:

As midwinter day drew closer, Jarlaxle sought to ingratiate himself with the Open Lord herself. He failed to find her at the soirees he attended, but did come away with several promises to call upon other nobles (3 allied upper class contacts).

The Open Lord was to busy to attend such gatherings, she mostly shows herself to celebrate Ahghairon's Day, but Eleasis the 1st is very far off.

One of the Drow mages continues to recieve training on the finer points of forgery, while the other begins to case the joint. Gathering information in preparation for attempting to steal the Scroll of Prismatic Wall that the Xanathar had located.

Spending the Research result to reduce the DC of the attempted Crime.

Several disguised Drow hit the local fighting pit circuits, coming away with a total purse of 200gp, but one of them knocks out a local favourite early on. Drawing the crowds ire. Two other Drow spent the week gambling, but came away with only a debt of 50gp each.

The final 3 drow attempted to rob several struggling merchants; they scored a haul of only 25gp worth of goods, driving an undertakers out of business, and their loot ended up being easily identifiable and would be unable to be fenced within the local region: A whistle made from a gold-coloured wood.

One of the people Soluun vandalised the Temple with was arrested for Tomb-robbing. They knew some of the crimes committed on the 11th of Nightal, were done by Soluuns associates, and were looking for a little aid with their current situation.

Be it from Jarlaxle or the City Watch.

Meanwhile, Fel'rekt, Krebbyg, Soluun, the Elite Drow, and a Drow Mage (along with the Shadow Demon he summoned), headed off to kidnap the Lords Alliance Envoy from Yartar. In a bid to replace them and begin to sway the Lord Alliances meeting towards 'Luskans' favour.

On the 14th of Nightal they successfully stole aboard the ship as it docked for the evening on the Dessarin river. They managed to silence the few sentries on watch before the sleeping crew became aware of their presence.

The slaughter that ensued culminated in the surrender and capture of the Envoy.

But the strike team was too small to man the craft, Jarlaxle was updated on their progress and a request for additional support was issued.

They would arrive by the 24th of Nightal, with disguises they'd finally make their way towards Waterdeep.

Cassalanter:

Victoro and Ammalia spend the week carousing in the salons of the city's elite. They came away after entertaining several new friends (4 allied upper class contacts). Crowelle's skulking gave him insight into 2 more potential blackmail targets.

Their Cult Fanatics hit the street, making several new friends (5 allied lower class contacts) though one of them awoke to find they were now married! The Cultists found themselves in the wrong part of town (2 hostile lower class contacts), but managed to find some friendly people to help them out (3 allied lower class contacts).

The imps continued their crime spree, looting 125gp worth of goods from several of the city's struggling merchants.

While the Devils guarded the Alter, accepting 159 in tithed gold, and 1 new convert.
