Musings on the Economic Impacts of Patrons

In a previous post I stated the goal of using the Treasure Hoard by CR, along with the Hireling and Upkeep rules, was to drive the Patrons to seeking ways of generating income, thus interacting with the World (and by extension the Player Characters).

Stay Humble; Hustle Hard.

The astute among you will also notice that the Starting Wealth of several of the Patrons seems quite extravagant.

As it stands this also something I am concerned about.

I hope it isn't so much liquid capital that they can disengage from the Table game entirely.

This fear is allayed slightly by the understanding that if I was to implement Patron characters in a non-module setting then they would (just as in AD&D or ACKS) have to use a part of that starting capital to build the Stronghold they are currently paying upkeep costs upon.

  • Force Grey's Fortified Tower - 15,000gp

  • Xanathar's Lair (treated as a Fort) - 15,000gp

  • The Cassalanter's Noble Estate with Manor - 25,000gp

  • Manshoon's Fortified Tower - 15,000gp

  • Jarlaxle's Ships 3x Sailing Ships - 30,000gp (although the Upkeep is treated as 3 Shops)

  • The Gralhunds Estate (treated as an Outpost/Fort) - 15,000gp (the Upkeep is treated as a City Inn)

The above prices are taken from the DMG - Building a Stronghold table, and the PHB - Waterborne Vehicles. And a couple of the Upkeep costs are rough equivalences that I drew from the DMG - Recurring Expense (Maintenance Costs).

With some quick eyeballing, we can see that with the inclusion of these costs, the Patrons starting wealth is brought more inline with our expectations (Read as: my gut feeling).

I am hopeful that the wealth funnels I have set in place (upkeep, taxes, and expenses) are enough to instigate Patron interaction.

It is certainly something I'll be keeping an eye on.

Update: The Cassalanter's Patron Player expressed concern they did not have enough starting wealth. The opposite of my initial worries. We'll see how this develops.
